Buenos Dias!! Welcome to the June 2004 Newsletter from Mi Casa del Mar in beautiful San Felipe!! Hot weather roared into San Felipe. Current temperature in San Felipe is 85 F at Day and around 74 F at night. This makes June a good month to spend a weekend at the beach. National Navy Day June 1 Today is National Navy day in Mexico (Día Del Marino). Every coast port in Mexico celebrates this day with civil, cultural and social events honoring Navy seamen. Here in San Felipe the fiesta begins at the fisherman statue on the Malecon. Afterward people enjoy free boat tours departing from the harbor and cruising around the entire bay. At night the activities include the election of a Fiesta Queen, cockfights, live music, fireworks and celebrations. Memorial Day weekend just finished and, as happens on every other US holiday, San Felipe was full of vacationers. Most of them came from California to enjoy the sun, sea and sand of San Felipe. We see a lot of ATV’ers and people having fun with water activities in the Sea of Cortez. Here in La Hacienda we also had a busy weekend with many people coming for a tour in our beautiful community!! San Felipe History San Felipe's contemporary history starts in 1876 when the Mexican government signed the colonization contract with Guillermo Andrade giving him permission to establish a colony. However, Andrade died before seeing his plan become reality. It was around 1925 when Abelardo Rodriguez was governor of the former territory of Baja California that San Felipe began to develop as an organized community. 1925 - the first fishing camps were established. 1928 - the first fishing society was founded and a year later the first school was established in town. 1947 - the Compañía Industrial del Golfo de Cortez, S. A., owned by José Maria Rodriguez Lujan, bought the properties of Guillermo Andrade's heirs in order to make San Felipe an international tourist resort. From 1948 to 1951 the Mexicali-San Felipe highway was paved and Mr. Rodriguez donated 1,426 acres to establish the town's first legal boundary. By 1963 San Felipe had electricity and in 1976 the piped water services were established. In the 1970’s San Felipe kept on growing. Restaurants, bars, government offices, and gas stations were built as well as larger facilities such as the boardwalk, the pier for fishing ships, the main entrance boulevard, and several streets and large avenues. In the 1980’s and 1990’s new hotels and tourist developments were built to meet the increasing demand for this kind of services. This is how San Felipe has become a tourist port with an estimated population of 20,000 people. This number can increase to 25,000 people when part-time residents return (retirees & vacation home owners) or on popular weekends such as Spring Break and Memorial Day when visitors come to take advantage of San Felipe's location, beauty and wide variety of services and activities.
